JCGS February Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, February 9, 2023, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. This meeting will be at the Family History Center in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints building located at 303 S. Nolan River Rd., Cleburne, TX 76033 (use North side entrance and then follow the signs). 

The program will be led by our President Joyce Reid who will be sharing about Finding Old Newspapers in Google Books. 

The public is encouraged to attend.

JCGS January Meeting

 The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, Jan 12, 2023, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. The meeting will be at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints located at 303 S. Nolan River Rd., Cleburne, TX 76033. 

Joyce Reid will be sharing a short video presentation about orphan trains.

Everyone is welcome, and you do not need to be a member to attend.

JCGS August Meeting - Beginner's Workshop

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, August 11th, 2016, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson.

We will be presenting, “Beginner’s Workshop, Part 2.” Come and learn how to begin researching your family history.

Mary Maxwell has been working on Genealogy for 25 years and will share with us some of the roadblocks that she has had to overcome in her research.

JCGS April Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, April 14th, 2016, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson.

Lisa Redden will be our speaker, presenting "Fun with Censuses." She will be discussing the information that we can glean from the U.S. Federal Census Schedules at different times in history, how and where to do searches, and being aware of potential inaccuracies found in them.

John Stevens, a member of the Board of Trustees for the Covington Cemetery Fund, will be our speaker and he will be presenting a family history titled, "Personal Letters of Philip and Elizabeth Ann White Gathings." It is a history of a Hill County pioneer family based on over 70 original letters and documents from 1846 to 1893. Since Covington is in the northern part of Hill County, there are several ties to Johnson County.

 

All are welcome, and you do not have to be a member to attend the meetings.

JCGS September Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, September 10th, 2015, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson.

Our presenter for the night will be Olyve Hallmark Abbott speaking about her seventh book, Come Sundown: The Life and Letters of a Frontier Woman. The book is based on the correspondence of her great-grandmother, Permelia Nickell Hawkins, who came with her family to Somervell County, Texas (George's Creek) from NE Kentucky in 1880. She saved her letters until her death in 1899. Afterward, her four daughters saved family letters that eventually came to Olyve.

JCGS July Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, July 9th, 2015, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson.

We will be meeting in the Genealogy Section of the Library instead of the back room where we normally meet. We will be showing what is available for use when researching your family tree. We will also be talking about what other types of documentation is available behind the desk upon request.

JCGS February Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, February 12, 2015, from 6:30 until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. We will be watching a recorded Webinar titled "Copyright Mythconceptions" presented by Judy G. Russell.

Judy is a genealogist with a law degree. She holds credentials as a Certified Genealogist and Certified Genealogical Lecturer from the Board for Certification of Genealogists, and serves on the faculty at IGHR at Samford University in Birmingham, the Salt Lake Institute of Genealogy (SLIG), the Genealogical Research Institute of Pittsburgh (GRIP), and at Boston University’s Center for Professional Education.

JCGS November Meeting

Want to make 2015 your best genealogy year ever? Then come to the Johnson County Genealogical Society meeting on Thursday, November 13, 2014 from 6:30 to 8:15 at the Cleburne Library. Our program will feature Lisa Alzo in a recorded webinar entitled “Genealogy Goals: How to Set Them, How to Keep Them.” Whether you desire to improve your research skills, find new cousins, break through a brick wall, or finally write that family history, this session will show you effective ways to set realistic and attainable goals, and offer tips and tricks to help you achieve them.

Also, we will be voting for officers for 2015-2016, so we need every member to attend.

JCGS October Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, October 9, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. Our program will be presented by Melvin Burt.

Melvin 'Sonny' Burt graduated from Cleburne High School in 1958 -- he immediately followed his great grandfather, grandfather, father, older brother and two uncles to a railroad career with the Santa Fe. Melvin has worked tirelessly to bring a railroad museum to Cleburne for over 20 years. He has served on the citizen's railroad museum advisory board for the City of Cleburne since the group’s conception.

Over the years, Melvin has researched his family genealogy extensively and is happy to share his findings with interested parties. He is an active member of the Terry's Texas Rangers Camp #1937-- an organization striving to honor and preserve the memory and true history of our Confederate ancestors.

JCGS September Meeting

Come one, come all … to a mini FGS Conference sampler at the Johnson County Genealogical Society meeting Thursday, Sept. 11, 2014, at 6:30 p.m. in the meeting room at the Cleburne Public Library.

Since you couldn’t go to the conference, the conference is coming to you. The “exhibit hall” opens at 6 p.m. There will be Door Prizes!

The program for this meeting will be a report by Finders Keepers Editor Marsha Buckner on the recent Federation of Genealogical Societies conference in San Antonio.

Bring a friend - or two - to the meeting. Everyone gets a prize!

JCGS August Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, August 14, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. Our program will be Show and Tell. Bring a document that you found while researching and tell us about it. The document might be the marriage record of your great grandparents, a deed, a Will, or a probate that led you to breaking through a brick wall. Tell us the following about your document:

Who is the document about?
What kind of document is it?
When was it made?
Where was it made?
Why is it important?
Where did you find it?

We really enjoyed our last Show and Tell and this one should be fun, also!  Hope to see you there!

Our program will be “Scanning Photos” presented by Debbie McCoy and Teresa Smith. Come learn the best techniques for scanning your photos. The public is invited to attend.

JCGS June Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, June 12, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. Our program will be Digital Photography presented by Sandra Crowley. Come learn some creative ways to use your photos to make your family story come alive.

Sandra is a member of several genealogical societies and non-profit boards. She is currently President of the Dallas Genealogical Society and is serving as Publicity Chair for the FGS Conference to be held in San Antonio in August. She is a past President of the Mid-Cities Genealogical Society and served as Vice President of Membership for the Texas State Genealogical Society from 2010-2012. Sandra is also President and Director of the Euless Library Foundation in Euless, Texas.

JCGS May Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, May 8, 2014, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. We are very excited to have John Wylie, President of the Texas State Genealogical Society (TSGS), speak to us about the benefits of state and national genealogical societies and national conferences. As you may know, the Federation of Genealogical Societies Conference is in San Antonio this year on August 27-30. TSGS is a local host for that conference. It’s an excellent chance to attend a national conference close to home.

John Vincent Wylie has been a full-time professional genealogist since 1990. He currently serves the Texas State Genealogical Society as President and was the 2012 State Conference Chair. From 2007 through 2009 he served the Association of Professional Genealogists as national Secretary. He is the 2004 recipient of the Dallas Genealogical Society’s Lloyd Bockstruck Distinguished Service Award.
