JCGS June Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, June 13, 2013, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson Street. Our program will be “The Old Soldiers of Johnson County” presented by Paul Martin. The public is invited to attend.
Paul Martin is the author of a two-volume series, The Old Soldiers and Settlers of Johnson County. The Old Soldiers of Johnson County is the subject of volume one which is located in several municipal libraries, as well as the Garrett-Jenkins Collection at the University of Texas at Arlington and the library at Hill College in Cleburne. The second volume chronicles the development of the county during the same time span (1868-1928) covered in the first volume. Some of the subjects covered in volume two include: transportation, entertainment, commerce, law and government, religion, and the Old Settlers' Reunion. The second volume is nearing completion, and will hopefully be finished before the end of the year.

Mr. Martin is a 7th generation Texan. He was born in Fort Worth and grew up on the southeast side of the city. His 4th great grandfather, Collin McKinney, signed Texas' Declaration of Independence, and Collin’s father and uncle were soldiers during the Revolutionary War. His interests include all phases of American history, mid to late 19th century music and historic buildings. He occasionally does some re-enacting and is a docent with the Texas Civil War Museum.
Members of the society will be in the genealogy section of the Cleburne Library at 5:30 p.m. each month before our regular meeting to help anyone with their family history research. Come join us!
