JCGS August Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, August 8, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. The public is always invited to attend our meetings.

Mr. Charles D. Lummus will be speaking on the life of Philip Nolan, a horse trader from Ireland who first came to Texas around 1791. In March 1801, Nolan and a group of men came to catch horses near the area that is now SH 174 northeast of Blum. The Spanish killed Nolan and captured the men with him. A Texas Historical Marker was erected at the site in memory of Nolan.

Mr. Lummus has been a student of Philip Nolan for fifty years. After growing up in Blum, Texas, he earned his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Texas. He served as a special agent with the FBI before practicing law in Cleburne, Texas from 1973 to 2008. Mr. Lummus served on the Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas from 1989 to 1992, representing Johnson, Tarrant, Hill and Ellis counties.

Members of the society will be in the genealogy section of the Cleburne Library at 5:30 p.m. each month before our regular meeting to help anyone with their family history research. Come join us!
