JCGS October Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, October 10, 2013, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. Our program will be “Johnson County History” presented by Randolph Garner. Mr. Garner is a long-time resident of Cleburne and is well known for his work with the Johnson County Heritage Foundation and the Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum. The public is invited to attend.

JCGS September Meeting



The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, September 12, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. Teresa Smith will demonstrate how to use the genealogy program Family Tree Maker along with Ancestry.com. Family Tree Maker is the most popular genealogy program and is a wonderful tool to help you organize your genealogy. All genealogy meetings are free and the public is invited to attend.

JCGS August Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, August 8, 2013, from 6:30 to 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson. The public is always invited to attend our meetings.

Mr. Charles D. Lummus will be speaking on the life of Philip Nolan, a horse trader from Ireland who first came to Texas around 1791. In March 1801, Nolan and a group of men came to catch horses near the area that is now SH 174 northeast of Blum. The Spanish killed Nolan and captured the men with him. A Texas Historical Marker was erected at the site in memory of Nolan.

Mr. Lummus has been a student of Philip Nolan for fifty years. After growing up in Blum, Texas, he earned his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Texas. He served as a special agent with the FBI before practicing law in Cleburne, Texas from 1973 to 2008. Mr. Lummus served on the Board of Directors of the State Bar of Texas from 1989 to 1992, representing Johnson, Tarrant, Hill and Ellis counties.

JCGS June Meeting

The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, June 13, 2013, from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson Street. Our program will be “The Old Soldiers of Johnson County” presented by Paul Martin. The public is invited to attend. 
 
Paul Martin is the author of a two-volume series, The Old Soldiers and Settlers of Johnson County. The Old Soldiers of Johnson County is the subject of volume one which is located in several municipal libraries, as well as the Garrett-Jenkins Collection at the University of Texas at Arlington and the library at Hill College in Cleburne. The second volume chronicles the development of the county during the same time span (1868-1928) covered in the first volume. Some of the subjects covered in volume two include: transportation, entertainment, commerce, law and government, religion, and the Old Settlers' Reunion. The second volume is nearing completion, and will hopefully be finished before the end of the year. 

Mr. Martin is a 7th generation Texan. He was born in Fort Worth and grew up on the southeast side of the city. His 4th great grandfather, Collin McKinney, signed Texas' Declaration of Independence, and Collin’s father and uncle were soldiers during the Revolutionary War. His interests include all phases of American history, mid to late 19th century music and historic buildings. He occasionally does some re-enacting and is a docent with the Texas Civil War Museum.

James Pylant, author of Blood Legacy, Sins of the Pioneers, and co-author of The Oldest Profession in Texas, works as a magazine editor and a professional genealogist.

The 3rd annual RootsTech conference will be held next week, March 21-23, 2013, in Salt Lake City, Utah.  If you can’t attend in person, you can watch 13 of the conference classes, including the daily keynote speakers, live on the RootsTech website at www.rootstech.org.  See the website for a schedule of the classes to be streamed live. To watch one of the live classes, just go to the website on the day and time of the class. If you miss the live telecasts, they are usually made available on the RootsTech website a few weeks after the conference has ended, but they have not announced if they will do that this year or not.

February Meeting - LaCata Starr Brown



The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, February 14, 2013 at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson St., from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m. Our program will be “Tracing Your American Indian Ancestry” presented by LaCata Starr Brown. The public is invited to attend.

LaCata Starr Brown has been a genealogist who has specialized in American Indian research for thirty years as of this year! She is of Cherokee, Shawnee and Scottish descent. She is a teacher, a traditional storyteller, an artist, a lecturer of American Indian history & culture and a traditional dancer. She also works with rescued dogs, and is a member of the Patriot Guard Riders.

Mrs. Brown was director and a teacher for the Fort Worth American Indian Education Program and a board member for the Tribal American Network. She has been a member of the American Indian Chamber of Commerce of Texas for 27 years, the Fort Worth Genealogical Society and the Cherokee Historical Society. She served on Ft. Worth Mayor Kay Granger's Steering Committee for "Our City Our Children".

Some of her lectures include American Indian Stereotype, Utilizing Traditional Belief for Emotional Healing, Responsibilities of Traditional Ways, and genealogical workshops on Tracing American Indian Ancestry.

We will also be meeting in the genealogy section of the Cleburne Library at 5:30 p.m. before our regular meeting to help anyone with research problems or questions, or how to get started tracing their family. Come join us!

JCGS January Meeting


The Johnson County Genealogical Society will meet Thursday, January 10, 2013 at the Cleburne Public Library, 302 W. Henderson St., from 6:30 p.m. until 8:15 p.m.
 
We will have a business meeting and install new officers.
Members and guests are encouraged to attend.

Also, we voted at our last meeting in November to meet at the library an hour before our regular meetings to assist anyone needing help with their research.  So, if you need help or just want to discuss your research, come meet with us at the Cleburne Library at 5:30 before the meeting!  Hope to see you there!
